Seated comfortably in their harnesses, pilots work the glider controls to carve smooth arcing turns through the sky, using lifts when available for temporary climbs before gliding to the next area of lift. This flowing flight affords much more time for taking the aerial perspective than a quick jump. The landing also usually involves a slow, graceful descent and flare rather than an abrupt uphill sprint like parachuting.

Technical Differences and Similarities


The most significant technical difference between parachutes and paragliders is that paragliders have specially designed lightweight fabric wings that take advantage of aerodynamic profiles and internal cell pressurization to generate substantial lift. This allows them to soar upward as well as forward when they locate rising air. Parachutes lack any rigid structure and are not engineered for lift; instead, they consist of a simple canopy that provides drag and slows the descent initiated by gravity. The paraglider pilot can ride lifts and manipulate the fabric wing above for control. The parachutist instead manages the flight path of their body suspended below the canopy.

Parachutists and paraglider pilots both utilize harnesses to connect to the canopy, altimeters and audibles to monitor altitude, radios for communication, and helmets for impact protection. However, the most notable gear difference is the wing itself: the parachute uses a simple round or square canopy without rigid structure, while the paraglider features a specially engineered wing for aerodynamic lift.
